Oils
Oils are a part of most, if not every, Filipino household. Newborns are given Aciete de Alcamforado (Camphorated Oil) and Aciete de Manzanilla (Chamomile oil) for relief of minor discomforts brought on by colds, colic, etc.
Growing up, we escalated to Efficascent Oil which is a blend of wintergreen, menthol, camphor, eucalyptus among others. This is used for almost everything — back pains, headaches, cramps, insect bites, sprains, gas, etc.
The ultimate “Tita” accessory would be White Flower Oil which is again, a blend of several essential oils like menthol, wintergreen, camphor, lavender, eucalyptus, etc. I have a small bottle of this in my bag, in my car, in my office drawer… anywhere you can think of. It’s just something I love to use when I feel nauseous.
So, why oils? I really don’t know. But I do know they work so I keep using them. I still use Aciete de Alcamforado on Blake when she complains of tummy ache (although this blend is usually used for coughs). It seems to do the job very well.
Essential Oils
I started using essential oils from Young Living a couple of months ago. I fell in love with my sister’s diffuser when I was in LA. I’ve had a hard time sleeping, I guess due to the pregnancy hormones. I had the same problem when I was pregnant with B. The diffuser helped a lot.
I got a set of oils from Target and started using them when I got back in Dubai. Because I didn’t want to use just any fragrance oils, I asked around where I can buy good quality oils for diffusing. Luckily a friend was into YL Essential Oils so she hooked me up. And I got hooked indeed.
What’s the Difference?
Essential oils are pure, authentic and therapeutic grade oils. The fact that YLEO’s are safe to ingest got me believing in it. I wouldn’t drink my White Flower oil even if my mom told me to. (More about YLEO here – Seed to Seal).
The oils that I was used to doesn’t have that kind of guarantee. Also, they are for topical use only while essential oils are safe to diffuse, apply topically and take in orally.
YLEO’s are pure and potent that you would have to follow proper dilution process. This, for me, is important. It means I’m getting good quality oils without additives. If I wanted Lavender oil, I get Lavender oil – pure and simple.
Creating your own blend and recipe is also a fun thing to do. All you need are essential oils, carrier oils, and glass bottles! (Will do a separate post on this).
